Ecclesiastes: Under the Sun

This Sunday evening (7 June 2009) we begin a new sermon series entitled, Under the Sun, in which we will work our way through the book of Ecclesiastes.

Needless to say, I am really, really, reeeeaaaalllly excited about this series.

I remember, as a moody teenager, pouring over Ecclesiastes again and again. At the time, the angst I found in this book perfectly matched my sullen mood, long greasy hair, devotion to Nirvana and my love of all things black.

Understanding the book a little better, it is clear to me that the Preacher (the writer/narrator of the book, more of which on Sunday) is concerned with more than appealing to mere teenage angst, the Preacher is engaged in a great experiment.  The Preacher deliberately sets out to test every experience under the sun and, in doing so, he presents us with the most brutal reality check and the starkest wake up call in the whole of Scripture.

Ecclesiastes is an unusual, striking and shocking book and is quite unlike anything else in Scripture. Ecclesiastes will challenge us to look at life with our eyes wide open and, in doing so, we will find, with the Preacher, that the end of it all is that we ‘fear God and keep his commandments’ (Ecclesiastes 12:13).

I would warmly encourage you to read ahead and wrestle with the deep truth of His Word and, I pray that as you do so, you would see Him more clearly and come to know Him more deeply.
