I really think that unless we get how much our sin offends God and how discusting it really is, then we will never understand fully how amazing his love is for us. And the cross reveals it all. His justice and our justification!

Also this should show in our worship not just our sunday morning singing the songs (although thats important) kind of worship, but our lives should reflect everything about the cross.

Yeah – chapter two really hammered home to me that whilst we obviously shouldn't drown in our shame and guilt and wallow in a depressive state, we do too easily slip into the mindset that we should pretty much forget about our sins of the past (and present, and future) because “God dealt with it”.

I think that if you lose sight of the horror of sin, you consequently lose sight of the amazing glory of the cross and resurrection. The Carson quote that Phill mentions above really struck me. The cross is regularly heralded as a spectacularly outpouring of love, but so often the part about it displaying God's wrath again sin is pushed into the sideline.

I felt that Carson did a fantastic job of pulling both of these aspects of the cross into the foreground.

Chapter 2 was excellent.

Will we ever be able to grasp the full horror of our sin to God? It seems that I always downplay it to some extent. "Sin is serious, but this little thing is nothing THAT major". I thought Carson put it brilliantly when he said:

"The cross spectacularly displays God's love, but it also displays God's wrath against sin; it massively underscores God's condemnation of sin."

We talked a little about this at study tonight. My sin is serious enough to require my death. It is so serious, in fact, that the only thing that can deal with it apart from my death is God, the Creator and Ruler of all, becoming flesh and being crucified for me.

What is my hope if I choose to reject the offer of salvation through faith in Christ? Only wrath. Either Christ takes God's wrath for me, or I do.

Sin is serious. God is love. We see these two truths in the cross.
